Children come back from school, roaming the hills while cattle bells ring in their ears.
What is more surprising, children go to school, when they shouldn’t have been alive in the first place. Children are laughing, running around, doing pranks to each other, although their childhood is marked by the feeling of being abandoned, unwanted and by the associated stigma.
Suffering old men with their legs amputated, stricken by incurable diseases, whom Romania has long condemned to solitude and ostracism, are praying.
Teen mothers are singing lullabies to their children and putting them to sleep all by themselves, deprived of any help whatsoever from the children’s fathers.
Screzii Valley is about them all, and so much more. It is about belief. The ardent belief of a man grazed by angels, Father Nicolae Tănase, that every being you leave behind, every fellow human you physically or spiritually kill by giving up on him is an insult to God.
Screzii Valley is about hope. The hope that wherever there is faith in people, God is there also, and everything else will duly follow.
Inspired by the ministry of Father Gheorghe Calciu Dumitreasa, his former teacher at the Theological Seminary in Bucharest, Father Nicolae Tănase gave life to a unique social phenomenon, a beautiful utopia in Screzii Valley. He built 28 social facilities for the last three decades and gave Romania’s „lost sheep” a new lease of life. We’re talking about orphans, abandoned children or children whose parents are working abroad, elders of various afflictions, whom the Romanian State rejects as if they were lazars.
Screzii Valley acts as a mirror to Romania’s ills, but also to her potential for doing good.
Children in Screzii Valley don’t have much: but they do have each other, and Father Tănase. With a guardian angel of this caliber, how could one fear loneliness, poverty or the future?
In Screzii Valley, one can see God working through people. He does it through tens of silent volunteers who keep the place running smoothly and who offer the inhabitants a warm meal, education, medical treatment, not to mention the gift of communion. God is at work through the thousands of philanthropists supporting Father Tănase’s social ministry, since 1994.
Now is your time to step out of the shadows and help.
Be a volunteer for the benefit of the children and the elders in Screzii Valley. Help young mothers find their path in life.
In 2020, Nothing But Ashes will immortalize the story of the Screzii Valley, the victors here and the guardian angels who help them. In 2020, the spectacle of Life, of Pain, of Victory that takes place here every day must be known by the whole world.
